Fluffy Homemade Waffles

Jump to Recipe

Waffles are a breakfast and brunch staple!

There are many people out there who prefer waffles to pancakes because of the crispy crunchiness outside and all of the melt in your mouth fluffiness inside! My husband is one of those people. I enjoy waffles myself because they do not get as mushy from toppings the way that pancakes do. The texture of them gives you crunch and softness in every bite.

These fluffy homemade waffles are guaranteed to be a hit at your breakfast table! Serve them nice and hot with butter and syrup, your favorite fruit topping, or fresh fruit and berries. Waffles are also very versatile, and you can even add things to this batter to completely change the waffle. You can add fruit, nuts, chocolate chips, sprinkles, etc. and get a completely different taste so you can never really get bored with waffles for breakfast!

I remember when I was a kid and my mom would make banana waffles using Bisquick and they were so good! These waffles are made from a few basic ingredients that I pretty much always make sure I have in stock. You will use flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, eggs, butter, milk, and vanilla extract.

These are my waffle batter ingredients.

Ingredients in Fluffy Homemade Waffles

Flour– Depending on your preference you can use regular all-purpose flour or even wheat flour as a healthy alternative. I use all-purpose flour and any brand will do.

Granulated sugar– This will give your waffles a nice sweetness to them that will have you wanting them every day of the week.

Baking powder– This is what is going to help your waffles rise and give you that fluffy inside that we all love so much.

Salt– Salt adds dimension to the flavor of the waffles. It balances the taste perfectly and you only need a pinch of it.

Eggs– Remember to beat your eggs separately and then add them to the dry ingredients. The eggs add to the outside crunch and inside fluffiness.

Melted butter– This is going to add amazing flavor to your waffles as well as having them melt in your mouth! You can substitute this for vegetable oil or margarine but it will not have the same flavor as butter does.

Milk– I suggest using whole milk for richness but any milk will do. I have also used skim milk and they come out delicious still.

Vanilla extract– This is the secret to many of my breakfast and dessert recipes. The vanilla flavor is unmatched and just puts the cherry on top of these waffles. The secret ingredient waffle lovers never knew they needed!

This is how your butter should look after melting it 75% of the way and whisking it until it is all melted.

Tips for Making Fluffy Homemade Waffles

  • When making these fluffy homemade waffles you want to make sure that you do not overfill the waffle iron. Doing this will result in the batter spilling out of the sides and making a mess.
  • Depending on the type of waffle iron you have, it may have a timer that tells you when the waffle is done. If you have one like mine that does not do that then I suggest you check on your waffle periodically while it is cooking so that it does not burn. Wait about a minute then check because checking too soon can cause your waffle to split top to bottom. 3 minutes was the perfect time for my waffles to cook.
  • When melting your butter do not melt it all the way. Melt it about 75% of the way and then just whisk it until it is all melted. Above is what your melted butter should look like. Allow it to cool before adding it to the batter so that the eggs don’t scramble in the mix.
  • These waffles freeze well so instead of saving batter, make them all and then freeze them after they cool down. Pop them in a toaster or the oven when you are ready to enjoy them again.
This is waffle batter that is completely mixed together.
