Big Fluffy Homemade Pancakes

Jump to Recipe

These pancakes are big, fluffy, and have delicious buttery and crispy edges!

I love pancakes for breakfast! I always have ever since I was a little girl and my dad would make them for breakfast. He makes the best crispy edge pancakes ever! I have developed a pancake recipe that satisfies my taste buds whenever I am craving pancakes for breakfast which is often! This is also the perfect breakfast item that you can just cut up and let your toddler eat on their own.

I like my pancakes to be buttery and full of vanilla flavor. I actually sometimes add more vanilla just because the batter smells just like ice cream before you make the pancakes and it is such a great smell that fills your home. There’s nothing like starting the day with the smell of scrumptious pancakes freshly made and then eating the best pancakes of your life.

Pancakes are also one of those recipes that are versatile. You can add fruit, sprinkles, chocolate chips, and many other yummy add ins. You can also top your pancakes with whatever you would like as well. We sometimes like to use whipped cream on top! I will feature many different variations of pancakes here on my blog so stay tuned for that!

Ingredients in Big Fluffy Homemade Pancakes

Flour– I use all-purpose flour but feel free to use wheat flour if you want a healthier alternative.

Sugar– This adds sweetness to the pancakes. I use granulated sugar in my recipe.

Baking Powder– This is going to add lift to your pancakes while they are cooking and make them thick and fluffy.

Salt– This is going to add dimension to the flavor of the pancakes and you only need a pinch.

Milk– I use skim milk in my recipe but feel free to you whatever milk you would like.

Butter– I like to use salted butter in my recipe because it adds even more flavor to the pancakes.

Vanilla Extract– I use this for a delicious vanilla flavored pancake. Feel free to omit this completely from your recipe if you are not a fan of vanilla flavor.

Egg– You will need one egg which also adds to the fluffiness of your pancake.

Tips for Big Fluffy Homemade Pancakes

  • It is best to make your pancakes using medium low heat because they can burn easily. I make mine on a gas stove in between 3-4. It is easier to cook the pancake for longer than it is to try to save a burned one.
  • Always butter your pan in between each pancake so that they do not stick, and they get those crispy edges. You can use spray butter or real butter.
  • If you do not like vanilla flavor, then omit it from the recipe.
  • You can make smaller pancakes with this batter as well and yield more pancakes.
  • If when you flip your pancake the batter is not completely lined up with the pancake, just use your spatula to bring everything back together for the perfect pancake every time.
  • These pancakes taste best with Mrs. Butterworth’s original syrup!

How to Make Big Fluffy Homemade Pancakes

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  2. Add in milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix well until everything is combined and batter is fairly smooth. A few small lumps are okay.
  3. Heat a pan on the stovetop to medium low heat.
  4. Add butter all around your pan and drop ¼ cup of batter into the center of your pan.
  5. Once the pancake’s edges start to puff up and the pancake is thicker flip it over.
  6. If you notice that it is a little light you can always flip it again to darken it up some more.
  7. Once your pancake is done place it on a plate or serving dish and repeat steps 4-7 until batter is gone.
  8. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.
  9. Enjoy!
