Easy Rich Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

This hot cocoa mix is rich in chocolate flavor and will bring you warmth and cheer during the colder months!

Hot cocoa is one of those comfort drinks that make you feel all warm and cozy inside and out! In cold weather like we are having now, it is the perfect drink to enjoy while watching movies, working from home, reading a good book, or doing many other hobbies that we love. I have always been a huge fan of hot chocolate, but I always found myself adding things to the pre-made stuff which led me to create my own recipe at home!

The most exciting thing about making your own hot cocoa mix is that you get to do whatever you want to it! Make it to YOUR liking and it can easily be changed or “fixed” if you do not like the way you made it the first time around. If it’s not sweet enough then add more sugar to the mix, if it’s not chocolatey enough then add more cocoa powder, and so on. Once you mix your cocoa up you can also add so many things to it to make it even more unique and delicious! Chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, marshmallows, whipped cream, sprinkles, you name it!

Hot cocoa is a tradition of ours during the holidays! In the fall you can add a little pumpkin pie spice to your mug or pumpkin spice extract. So good! You can add crushed candy canes or peppermint extract as well. The possibilities are endless so get creative and enjoy every drop! This mix makes a great amount and depending on how much you like to drink and how often. You can use 2-3 tablespoons of the mix in 8 oz of water, milk, almond milk, or coffee. Now let’s get into what you will need for the best hot cocoa mix!

Ingredients in Rich Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

Dry Milk- This is the base of your hot cocoa and is why you can use hot water or coffee and it will still be milky.

Cocoa Powder- This is what gives the hot cocoa its chocolate flavor and depending on your preference you can add more or less than what the recipe calls for.

Powdered Sugar- This adds sweetness to your hot cocoa mix, and I like to use powdered sugar instead of granulated because it dissolves much easier in the hot liquid.

Salt- This adds that much needed balance of flavor and really brings the cocoa flavor out even more, but you can skip it if you would like to.

Box of Pudding Mix- This add flavor to your hot cocoa and makes it ever so slightly thicker so that it isn’t watery like boxed cocoas can be.

Tips for the Best Rich Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix

  • All five ingredients make the hot cocoa mix taste really good, so I do not recommend leaving anything out.
  • Use more cocoa powder if you want more of a chocolatey cup of hot cocoa. You can also use about a tablespoon of chocolate chips as well and they melt nicely into the cocoa. You only need a few. You can use whatever flavor you would like in your cocoa.
  • Some of my favorite toppings are marshmallows and whipped cream!
  • You can also add liquid creamer into your prepared mug of hot cocoa for added flavor and there are so many to choose from!
  • Sift all of your ingredients before whisking them together and this will ensure that you do not have to break up many clumps when mixing your hot cocoa.
