Description

Create a fun and visually stunning Watermelon Shark Fruit Board perfect for summer parties or kid-friendly gatherings. This colorful fruit platter features a carved watermelon shaped like a shark filled with an assortment of fresh grapes, berries, citrus, and melon balls, decorated with playful gummy sharks and marshmallows for a whimsical touch.

Ingredients

Scale

Watermelon Shark

  • 1 large seedless watermelon
  • 2 blueberries (for eyes)
  • 2 slices of apple or banana (for eye whites)

Fruit Filling and Surroundings

  • 2 cups seedless green grapes
  • 2 cups seedless red grapes
  • 1 pint blueberries
  • 1 pint strawberries, hulled and halved
  • 2 kiwis, peeled and sliced
  • 2 oranges, peeled and segmented
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks
  • ½ cup blackberries
  • 1 cup cantaloupe balls or cubes
  • 1 cup honeydew balls or cubes

Decorations

  • Fresh mint leaves (optional)
  • 1 cup gummy fish or sharks
  • ½ cup mini marshmallows (to mimic bubbles)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Watermelon Shark: Slice a thin piece off the bottom of the watermelon so it sits flat and stable on a surface. Cut about one-third off one end at an angle to create the shark’s mouth opening. Use a spoon or melon baller to scoop out the flesh from the cut section carefully, reserving the fruit for later use. Then, using a paring knife, carve jagged, triangular teeth along the edge of the mouth to resemble shark teeth. For eyes, attach apple or banana slices just above the mouth using toothpicks and place a blueberry at the center of each slice to complete the eye look.
  2. Assemble the Fruit Board: Dice the reserved watermelon flesh into bite-sized pieces. In a mixing bowl, combine this watermelon with green grapes, red grapes, blueberries, strawberries, orange segments, pineapple chunks, blackberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, and kiwi slices for a colorful fruit medley. Fill the inside of the carved shark’s mouth generously with this fruit mixture, simulating shark bait. Then, on a large serving board or platter, arrange the remaining fruits and melon balls around the carved watermelon shark, mixing colors and shapes to create an appealing pattern and visual interest. Scatter gummy fish or shark candies and mini marshmallows around for whimsical decoration. Optionally, garnish with fresh mint leaves for a pop of green and added freshness.
  3. Serve: Present the fruit board immediately to maintain freshness. Provide small tongs, toothpicks, or forks nearby to allow guests to easily pick and enjoy the fruit. This vibrant and creative fruit board makes a perfect centerpiece for summer parties, kids’ events, or a healthy snack option.

Notes

  • Use a sharp paring knife for precise carving of the shark teeth.
  • Seedless watermelon and grapes make assembling and eating easier and less messy.
  • To keep fruit fresh longer, refrigerate the assembled board and cover with plastic wrap if not serving immediately.
  • Swap the gummy fish with fruit snacks or skip entirely for a healthier option.
  • Mini marshmallows add a playful bubble effect but can be omitted for dietary restrictions or allergies.
  • Feel free to customize the fruit selection based on seasonal availability and personal preferences.
