Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
Filling
- ½ cup strawberry jam or strawberry preserves
Egg Wash
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
Finishing
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet gently to smooth out any creases, making it easier to cut uniform shapes.
- Cut out hearts: Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out 8-10 heart shapes from the dough depending on cutter size.
- Arrange base hearts: Place half of the cut heart shapes onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Add the filling: Spoon about 1 teaspoon of strawberry jam onto the center of each heart on the baking sheet, leaving a small border around the edges for sealing.
- Moisten edges: Brush the edges of these jam-covered hearts lightly with water to help seal the top layer.
- Top with hearts: Place the remaining heart-shaped pieces on top of each jam-covered base, gently pressing around the edges to seal the two layers together firmly.
- Apply egg wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to make an egg wash. Brush this over the top of each pastry heart for a shiny, golden finish.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed up and golden brown.
- Cool: Remove the puff pastry hearts from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet.
- Finish and serve: Once slightly cooled, dust the tops generously with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the puff pastry stays cold before baking for best puff.
- You can use any fruit jam or preserves as a substitute for strawberry.
- Make sure to seal the edges well to prevent the filling from leaking out while baking.
- Powdered sugar adds a lovely touch, but can be omitted if preferred.
- Serve slightly warm or at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
