Scale
Buttercream Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 3–4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Beat the Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed for about 2–3 minutes until it becomes creamy and pale in color.
- Add Powdered Sugar Gradually: Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed initially to prevent splattering. After each addition, increase the speed to medium and beat until the mixture is smooth.
- Add Flavorings: Add the vanilla extract and salt, then mix until everything is well combined.
- Adjust Consistency: Slowly add heavy cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, beating on medium-high speed until the buttercream reaches your desired consistency—smooth, fluffy, and easy to spread or pipe.
- Modify Thickness if Needed: If the mixture is too thick, add a little more cream. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar as needed.
- Use or Store: Use the buttercream immediately to frost your baked goods, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Re-whip before using if chilled.
Notes
- For chocolate buttercream, add 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder or melted cooled chocolate to the mixture.
- For a whiter buttercream, use clear vanilla extract and beat the butter for an extra few minutes to lighten the color.
