Description

This irresistibly easy Beef and Broccoli recipe delivers tender, flavorful slices of beef paired with crisp, vibrant broccoli in a savory homemade sauce. Ready in just 25 minutes, it’s a perfect weeknight dinner that guarantees a restaurant-quality meal with minimal effort, featuring a delicious balance of soy, ginger, and garlic flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Vegetables

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for coating beef)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds and green onions, for garnish (optional)

Sauce

  • 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, beef broth or water, brown sugar, cornstarch, oyster sauce (if using), and sesame oil until smooth. Set the sauce aside to allow the cornstarch to dissolve properly.
  2. Coat the beef: In a medium bowl, toss the thinly sliced beef with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, salt, and pepper to evenly coat the meat. This step helps to tenderize the beef and create a slight crust when cooked.
  3. Cook the beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the beef in a single layer and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side until browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Sauté aromatics: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger (if using) and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
  5. Cook the broccoli: Add the broccoli florets to the skillet and stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until bright green and slightly tender but still crisp. You may add a splash of water and cover briefly to steam if desired.
  6. Combine and finish cooking: Return the beef to the skillet with the broccoli. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and broccoli. Stir well to combine and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and the beef is cooked through.
  7. Garnish and serve: Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For more tender beef, slice the steak thinly against the grain.
  • You can substitute broccoli with other vegetables like snap peas, bell peppers, or bok choy for variety.
  • Oyster sauce is optional but adds depth and umami to the sauce.
  • Make sure not to overcook the beef to keep it tender and juicy.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to control the saltiness of the dish.
