Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 200 g (7 oz) cream cheese, softened
- 50 g (1/4 cup) granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup diced fresh strawberries
Sandwich
- 8 slices sandwich bread (white or brioche recommended)
Batter
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
Coating
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional)
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
For Frying and Serving
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
- Extra fresh strawberries or strawberry syrup (for serving)
Instructions
- Assemble the Sandwiches: In a bowl, mix softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and diced fresh strawberries until well combined. Spread this filling evenly onto 4 slices of bread.
- Seal the Sandwiches: Top the filled slices with the remaining bread slices, pressing the edges gently to seal. For a neater look, trim the crusts if desired.
- Prepare the Batter: Beat the eggs and milk together in a shallow bowl to create the batter. In a separate small bowl, combine granulated sugar and ground cinnamon if using for coating.
- Heat the Oil: Pour about 1 inch of vegetable or canola oil in a frying pan and heat it over medium heat until it reaches approximately 175°C (350°F).
- Dip and Fry the Sandwiches: Dip each sandwich into the egg batter, ensuring both sides are coated. Then carefully place the sandwiches into the hot oil. Fry for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until they turn a golden brown color.
- Drain and Coat: Remove the sandwiches and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil. While still warm, optionally roll or sprinkle the sandwiches in the cinnamon-sugar mixture for extra sweetness and flavor.
- Serve: Dust the sandwiches with powdered sugar and serve immediately with extra fresh strawberries or drizzle with strawberry syrup for a delicious finish.
Notes
- Use brioche or white sandwich bread for the best texture and flavor.
- Be careful with the oil temperature to avoid greasy or undercooked sandwiches.
- Trimming the crusts is optional but helps seal the sandwiches better and presents nicely.
- You can customize the filling by adding other berries or a touch of lemon zest.
- Serve immediately after frying for the crispiest texture.
