Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
Instructions
- Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking pan, approximately 18×13 inches, to ensure the cake does not stick after baking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt. This combines all the dry components evenly.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, mix buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
- Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gently pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined to avoid overmixing, which can make the cake tough.
- Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Make the Frosting: While the cake bakes, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the cocoa powder until smooth. Remove from heat and gradually mix in powdered sugar and milk until you achieve a smooth, spreadable consistency.
- Frost the Cake: Once the cake is slightly warm, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Let the cake cool completely before cutting and serving for best results.
Notes
- Make sure to not overmix the batter to keep the cake tender and moist.
- Use room temperature eggs for better integration into the batter.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk; let it sit for 5 minutes.
- For a richer flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder and pure vanilla extract.
- Allow the cake to cool slightly before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
