Description

This Easy Texas Sheet Cake is a classic, moist chocolate dessert perfect for gatherings and celebrations. Featuring a tender crumb soaked in rich cocoa and topped with a luscious homemade chocolate frosting, it’s a crowd-pleaser that’s simple to prepare and bake in one pan.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking pan, approximately 18×13 inches, to ensure the cake does not stick after baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt. This combines all the dry components evenly.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, mix buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and homogenous.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gently pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined to avoid overmixing, which can make the cake tough.
  5. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Make the Frosting: While the cake bakes, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the cocoa powder until smooth. Remove from heat and gradually mix in powdered sugar and milk until you achieve a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  7. Frost the Cake: Once the cake is slightly warm, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Let the cake cool completely before cutting and serving for best results.

Notes

  • Make sure to not overmix the batter to keep the cake tender and moist.
  • Use room temperature eggs for better integration into the batter.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to 1 cup of milk; let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • For a richer flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder and pure vanilla extract.
  • Allow the cake to cool slightly before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
