Description

This Easy Hibachi Steak with Fried Rice recipe brings the flavors of classic Japanese hibachi cooking right to your home. Tender NY Strip Steak is marinated in a savory blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, Worcestershire sauce, and honey, then quickly grilled to perfection. Served alongside flavorful fried rice made with Basmati rice, eggs, onions, mixed vegetables, and a touch of soy sauce, butter, and sesame seeds, this dish is perfect for a fast, delicious, and satisfying meal that serves 4 in about 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Steak

  • 1½ lbs NY Strip Steak
  • 2 tbsp low sodium soy sauce (or tamari)
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil (or olive oil)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey (optional)

For the Fried Rice

  • 6 cups cooked and cooled Basmati rice
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil (or olive oil)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 eggs
  • 12 oz bag frozen vegetables, thawed
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

For the Spicy Mayo Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak Marinade: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger paste, Worcestershire sauce, and honey (if using) until well combined. This marinade will flavor and tenderize the steak.
  2. Marinate the Steak: Place the NY Strip Steak in a shallow dish or ziplock bag and pour the marinade over it. Let it sit for at least 10-15 minutes to absorb the flavors. You can marinate longer for a more intense taste.
  3. Cook the Steak: Heat a griddle or a heavy skillet over high heat for about 4 minutes until very hot. Add the steak and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, depending on desired doneness. Remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing thinly.
  4. Start the Fried Rice: In the same griddle or skillet, add sesame oil and get it hot on high heat. Add the diced onion, followed by the cooled Basmati rice and eggs. Toss and stir continuously, cooking for about 3 minutes until eggs are scrambled and rice is heated through.
  5. Add Vegetables and Seasoning: Stir in the thawed mixed vegetables. Pour in the soy sauce and add butter, minced garlic, ginger paste, and sesame seeds. Continue cooking and stirring for another 5 minutes until the rice develops a golden color and the vegetables are tender.
  6. Prepare the Spicy Mayo Sauce: In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, Sriracha, and salt to taste. This creamy sauce adds a mild spicy kick and pairs perfectly with the steak and rice.
  7. Serve: Plate the sliced hibachi steak alongside the fried rice. Drizzle or serve the spicy mayo sauce on the side. Enjoy your flavorful homemade hibachi meal!

Notes

  • Make sure to use cooked and fully cooled rice for the best fried rice texture; freshly cooked rice tends to be too moist and sticky.
  • If you prefer less spice, adjust or omit the Sriracha in the mayo sauce.
  • Feel free to substitute the NY Strip Steak with ribeye or sirloin for different flavor and texture.
  • Using a griddle helps achieve an authentic hibachi texture and even cooking, but a large skillet works as well.
  • For a gluten-free option, use tamari instead of soy sauce and check Worcestershire sauce ingredients.
