Description

This Chicken Yakitori recipe features tender, juicy chicken breasts and fresh green onions grilled to perfection on bamboo skewers, brushed with a sweet and savory homemade yakitori sauce made from soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Perfect as a flavorful appetizer or main dish, these skewers are easy to prepare and bring a taste of traditional Japanese street food to your home grilling experience.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Skewers

  • 2 small chicken breasts, skinless and boneless
  • 4 large green onions
  • 10 bamboo skewers

Yakitori Sauce

  • 2/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2/3 cup mirin
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar

Others

  • Oil for grilling
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Soak Skewers: Place the bamboo skewers in cold water for 5 minutes to prevent them from burning during grilling.
  2. Make Yakitori Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it gently simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. Cut Chicken and Green Onions: Slice the chicken breasts and green onions into 2-inch pieces suitable for threading onto skewers.
  4. Assemble Skewers: Thread alternating pieces of chicken and green onions onto the soaked bamboo skewers. Brush the assembled skewers generously with the prepared yakitori sauce.
  5. Grill Skewers: Heat grill to medium heat and lightly oil the grate. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for about 5 minutes, turning frequently to ensure even cooking and caramelization, brushing more sauce intermittently.
  6. Serve: Remove the skewers from the grill, sprinkle with chopped green onions and sesame seeds for garnish, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Soaking bamboo skewers prevents them from burning on the grill.
  • Adjust sugar in the sauce to taste depending on your preferred sweetness level.
  • Basting the skewers during grilling helps keep the chicken moist and flavorful.
  • These skewers can also be cooked under a broiler or on a stovetop grill pan if an outdoor grill is unavailable.
  • Use fresh green onions for the best flavor contrast to the savory sauce.
