Ingredients
Scale
Chicken and Skewers
- 2 small chicken breasts, skinless and boneless
- 4 large green onions
- 10 bamboo skewers
Yakitori Sauce
- 2/3 cup soy sauce
- 2/3 cup mirin
- 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
Others
- Oil for grilling
- Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Soak Skewers: Place the bamboo skewers in cold water for 5 minutes to prevent them from burning during grilling.
- Make Yakitori Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it gently simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Cut Chicken and Green Onions: Slice the chicken breasts and green onions into 2-inch pieces suitable for threading onto skewers.
- Assemble Skewers: Thread alternating pieces of chicken and green onions onto the soaked bamboo skewers. Brush the assembled skewers generously with the prepared yakitori sauce.
- Grill Skewers: Heat grill to medium heat and lightly oil the grate. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for about 5 minutes, turning frequently to ensure even cooking and caramelization, brushing more sauce intermittently.
- Serve: Remove the skewers from the grill, sprinkle with chopped green onions and sesame seeds for garnish, and serve immediately.
Notes
- Soaking bamboo skewers prevents them from burning on the grill.
- Adjust sugar in the sauce to taste depending on your preferred sweetness level.
- Basting the skewers during grilling helps keep the chicken moist and flavorful.
- These skewers can also be cooked under a broiler or on a stovetop grill pan if an outdoor grill is unavailable.
- Use fresh green onions for the best flavor contrast to the savory sauce.
