Ingredients
Scale
Beef Marinade
- 1 lb beef (flank steak or sirloin), thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon cooking wine (optional)
Sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¼ cup water or beef broth
Vegetables and Aromatics
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
Cooking Oils
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (or vegetable oil)
Instructions
- Marinate the beef: In a bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon oyster sauce, cornstarch, and cooking wine if using. Let it marinate for at least 10-15 minutes to tenderize and infuse flavor.
- Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, and water or beef broth. Set this sauce mixture aside for later use.
- Cook the beef: Heat a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sesame oil and swirl to coat the pan. Once hot, add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the beef is just browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
- Cook the onions and aromatics: In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed, then toss in the sliced onions. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until they soften and begin to caramelize. Add the minced garlic and ginger, stirring for another minute until fragrant.
- Combine and simmer: Return the beef to the pan with the onions. Pour in the prepared sauce, stirring to evenly coat the beef and onions. Let the mixture simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly and everything is heated through.
- Garnish and serve: Sprinkle the chopped green onions on top and serve the stir fry immediately over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh ginger and garlic to enhance the aroma and flavor.
- You can substitute beef broth with water, but broth adds more depth to the sauce.
- Adjust the soy sauce quantity to taste if you prefer a saltier or milder dish.
- Cooking wine is optional but recommended to tenderize the beef and enrich flavor.
- Use a wok or a heavy skillet to ensure even, high-heat cooking.
- Serve immediately to enjoy the beef tender and the onions caramelized.
