Description

These Cheesy Gochujang & Spring Onion Swirls are a delightful fusion appetizer featuring a flaky puff pastry base rolled with a spicy and sweet Korean gochujang sauce, melted mozzarella and cheddar cheese, and fresh spring onions. Baked to golden perfection and optionally topped with sesame seeds, these swirls offer a perfect combination of spicy, savory, and cheesy flavors in every bite, ideal for parties or snack time.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (or pizza dough if preferred)

Cheese

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

Sauce

  • 2 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil

Vegetables & Finishers

  • 2-3 spring onions, finely chopped
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare the Gochujang Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the gochujang, soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil until the mixture is smooth and well combined, balancing heat with sweetness.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to about 1/4 inch thickness. If using pizza dough, roll it out to the same thickness to ensure even cooking.
  4. Spread the Gochujang Sauce: Evenly spread the prepared gochujang sauce over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges to help with rolling.
  5. Add the Cheese and Spring Onions: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella, grated cheddar cheese, and finely chopped spring onions evenly over the sauce-covered dough for a flavorful and textured filling.
  6. Form the Swirls: Starting from one edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Use a sharp knife to slice the log into 1-inch thick pieces creating individual swirls.
  7. Prepare for Baking: Arrange the swirls cut side up on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them to allow expansion. Brush the tops with a lightly beaten egg for a lovely golden color and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
  8. Bake: Bake the swirls in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and the cheese inside is melted and bubbly.
  9. Serve: Let the swirls cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature as a snack or appetizer.

Notes

  • You can substitute puff pastry with pizza dough for a chewier texture.
  • For a spicier kick, add more gochujang to the sauce.
  • Use an egg wash to achieve a glossy golden crust; omit if you prefer a matte finish.
  • Sesame seeds add a nice nutty flavor but are optional.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in a warm oven to retain crispiness.
