Caramel Sauce Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional, for salted caramel)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Melt the Sugar: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar, stirring constantly with a heat-resistant spatula to prevent burning and ensure even melting.
- Add the Butter: Once the sugar has melted and turned a deep amber color, carefully add the cubed butter. Continue stirring until the butter is fully melted and integrated with the sugar mixture.
- Incorporate the Cream: Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring constantly. Be cautious, as the mixture will bubble vigorously. Stir for 1-2 minutes until the sauce is smooth and fully combined.
- Season the Caramel: If making salted caramel, stir in the salt at this stage. Add the vanilla extract if desired, mixing well to incorporate the flavors completely.
- Cool and Store: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the caramel sauce to cool slightly before serving or transferring to an airtight container. The sauce will thicken as it cools, making it perfect for drizzling or dipping.
Notes
- Use a heat-resistant spatula or wooden spoon to avoid melting utensils.
- Be very careful when melting sugar as it reaches high temperatures and can cause burns.
- The sauce thickens as it cools; if it becomes too thick, gently warm to loosen it.
- Store caramel sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Reheat gently before use.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream and butter with a vegan alternative.
