For the cake:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 cup whole milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
- Make the topping: Melt 3 tablespoons of butter with brown sugar, then pour into the pan and arrange apple slices on top.
- Prepare the cake batter: Brown butter, mix with sugars, eggs, and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients and milk, then add to the wet mixture.
- Bake: Pour batter over apples and bake for 40–45 minutes. Invert onto a plate after cooling for 10 minutes.
